fuel relay,trans filter 700 1987

My fuel pump relay is not running with the key turned to on.if I try to start the car and crank for a moment the pumps will run and stop.
I think ?? that is why it is hard to start??

from what I have read I am NOT to pull the pan and change the trans filter ??

When you turn the key to ON, not START, you should hear the buzz of the fuel pumps for about one second. If you turn the key to START, the pump should run too, but you won't hear it over the starter and engine. If your car runs at all, I have to think your pumps are running, but try to hear them.

First thing to look at on a hard start is poor spark or your Idle Air Control valve. Look for the troubleshooting info in the 700/900 FAQ under SELECT LINK at the top right of this page. There is a wealth of info in there to help point you toward your hard start solution.

The pump isnt suppose to run unless the car is running. That way if you are in an accident, you are not pumping 30psi fuel all over. It needs an ignition signal to run. So it should run just as you engage the starter and then stop. I think all FI system are like this.

On these Volvos, and I think this must be true on most cars, the fuel pump should run (for about a second) when you turn the key to ON (or straight to START), then it will stop running if the engine isn't turning. That's because the fuel pressure has to be brought up so the injectors are shooting fuel in so the engine can start.

But it is true that except for this "priming" second, the fuel pumps won't run unless the engine is turning for safety purposes.

Pumps do not run until the engine is cranked and igition pulses are sensed. What you are experiencing is normal. Can you describe the hard to start in more detail.

Tranny filter never clogs or needs servicing. Actually there is no filter, it is simply a screen. Removing the pan is a waste of time and will likely be frustrating because the filler tube can be very difficult to remove. To change fluid simply perform a flush.
