AW70 valve body gasket sets

I have been overhauling the valve body on the AW70/71 in my 86 740T. A few of the plastic balls were worn down from 5.5mm to 4.25mm, making shifting a real pain.
On reassembly I find that I have the incorrect gasket set.
The ID plate on the side of the trans is missing, so I do not know if this is a 70 or 71. I THINK this year is supposed to be an AW71. The valve body components and covers are marked both AW 03-70 and AW 03-71, so this is no help in determining the model. I believe this is the original trans, but have no proof of that.
Most notably I find the gasket for the cover for the lower valve housing is significantly different, as well as both gaskets for the separator plate.
Are the gasket sets different between the 70 and 71?Can someone please help me?
Living 16 hours drive from the closest Volvo dealer makes this kind of mixup a real bad experience, as parts are not readily at hand.

    AW70 valve body gasket sets

    If you have a look up on the side of the trans (above where the id plate usually sits) you should see either 03-70 or 03-71 stamped onto the trans casing. You'll probably need a torch to see it though. Have you had a look at my valve body website? http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~wightman.b/ or in the 700/900 FAQ. The gasket set shown on the first page is for an AW-71L.

    Hope this helps

      Brad;
      The markings on the trans above the missing ID plate identify it as an AW71.
      I have used your website document extensively. I pasted it into a Word document, printed out on a laser printer, and studied it through and through while I waited for the Volvo greenbook to arrive. Its a great writeup, and very useful, thanks.
      You mention that the photos on page one are og gaskets for an AW71L; are the gaskets supposed to be different between the locker and nonlocker?
      If I could ever figure out how to upload an image on this site I have a picture showing the new gasket set (as your webpage shows) and the gaskets from my trans.

        AW70 valve body gasket sets

        I believe there are differences between the valve bodies in locking & non-locking AW70/71. The locking trans has a couple of extra valves (change-over valve and signal valve) that actuate the lockup function. Since yours is a turbo you shouldn't have lock up. I say shouldn't because if you are the original owner who knows whether the gearbox has been swapped at some time. The Volvo green book is vital if doing this job although the details on the valve body are somewhat limited to dismantling and reassembly. But it does give all the torque figures for the bolts. Just make sure you take plenty of photos to help you put it all back together!!

        Let me know if I can help further. I may have some extra photos on file somewhere too. I'll have a look.

          AW70 valve body gasket sets

          Brad;
          I got the right gaskets today (AW71, not 71L) and put the valve body together on the bench. Installation will take place tomorrow night after work.
          As I was looking at the guide you wrote, I noticed that the picture of your separator plate shows exactly the same gouge as mine did. What the heck is that from? Your picture is on Step 23, and the gouge is just below the hole in the plate for the cooler bypass valve. When I saw it on mine I thought I was going to have to replace the plate, but then I noticed it on your as well, and you made no comment on it, so it must be okay. Or is it?

            I, too, noticed that gouge in the plate but I chose to ignore it and the trans was fine. The bypass valve exerts a fair amount of pressure against the plate and plate itself is probably fairly soft. I had a look at the extra photos I have but none of them would be any more helpful than what is already on the website.

            Hope everything works out well when you get it back together. Let me know how it goes.

            Regards

              AW70 valve body gasket sets

              Hi Brad;
              I buttoned up the trans last night, filled it with 5.5l of DexronIII and fired it up on the jack stands, brake on. I ran it through though the gears at idle, a number of times, and it seems to be fine. I haven't taken it on the road yet to test it under load, as I am replacing balljoints and bushings tonight and this weekend, so I wnat to leave it up till that is done.
              I am a bit leery of the kickdown adjustment, but I followed Brickboard instructions along with Bentleys and Haynes, so I might be okay. I will let you know.
              I have to do the trans on my 84 240GLE next. Same operation. It shifts like a brute from 1 to 2. I have another AW70/71 gasket set on order. Funny thing about that is that the AW71L gasket sets I was sent in error were 69 dollars each, but the dealer charged me 120 dollars for correct AW71 set, almost double the price. I think somone has made an error.

          AW70 valve body gasket sets

          Hi Brad, thanks for getting back to me.
          The dealer in Vancouver has told me he is sending a set for an AW71, as the one he had originally sent was for a 71L, as you have said is appropriate for the non-turbo. My car is a Turbo. I can only assume that this is the original trans. The car has 309,000km on the clock, so the wear on the plastic balls would seem to be consistent with that age a trans as well.
          I need to do this job on my 84 240GLE as well. I have not crawled underneath to see whether there is a locker in there or not. I hope the ID plate is still attached on this one. The car has only 190,000km on it and is in terrific kit.
          I did not take any snaps of the disassembly, but meticulously followed the greenbook and your guide. For identifying placement of differnt lenth bolts I sketched a picture on a cardboard box, and inserted the different length bolts in holes I made through the box.
          If you do indeed have additional photos, they could prove to be useful; I would be most interested in viewing them.
