a 1966 PV544 444-544

Hello all again, I got to doing some more research and a few websites (their names slip my mind at the moment) said that the PV 544 was no longer sold in th US after 1965.
The guy said that is he is the thrid owner of the car. I'm wondering where it was brought in from.
And on another note, I think I got my Dad sort of talked in to it, as long as I keep it away from the house. After all we already have a half dozen cars here along with a 23' camper. But my friend said I could more then likely keep it at his house.
Either way I'll keep you posted, or if someone is planning on coming out to Bililngs MT and is intrested in it I'll show it to you.
Have a Good one.

According to my resources (PV-klubben Faktabok), 1965 was the last year of production, referred to as the 544 G model. In total 3401 of the G models were produced, ending the PV production run of 440,000 cars on October 20th, 1965. The last car produced was apparently saved for the museum, although it is not yet on display.

The 1965 production, started in August of 1965 was broken down into sub-models:

11121F - 19 produced (Favorit, stripped down for domestic market)
    11134F - 2260 (Special model)
    11234F - 435 (Special model)
    11244F - 408 (Sport model)
Okända - 279 (Literal translation is "unknown")

The first digit, 1 signifies a "personbil" or private car, opposed to the commercial Duett (2). The second 1 signifies the 544 model (2 - Amazon 4 door, 3 - Amazon 2 door and 8 for the 1800). The 3rd digit is 1 for a B18A and 2 for the mainly exported B18D engine. The 4th digit indicates the market this PV was built for; 2 - Sweden domestic, 3 - export, 4 - USA export. The 5th digit signifies the transmission; 1 - M30, 3 speed and 4 - M40, 4 speed. The last letter indicates the year manufactured - F 1965 production.

Since the production only lasted 3 months and it can take up to a further 3 months to arrive at the dealership, I can see why some of these were possibly sold in calendar year 1966 as a 1966 model.

We can discuss this further in Kansas City. See you there...

My Volvo PV 544 is a late G Special...
      11134G (B18A engine)
It was produced in October 1965, but delivered the 14th of January 1966.

The 1965 F-model was produced from August 1964 to August 1965.
The 1966 G-model was produced during the following 3 months.
(Between August 1965 and October 1965)

      Addendum 444-544

After thinking about this and conferring with my Swedish friend Mats, I guess these cars can be honestly called a 1966 544. As Mats pointed out, the new year's production always started in August, so a G model is in fact a 1966.

I have seen a '66 PV 544 in my town. The numbers agree with Volvo production numbers for 1966. I think the guy who owns it is the 2nd or 3rd owner. He never said anything that would make you think that it was not imported to the US as a new car.

Yeah, things were just a bit more casual back then, before the cars had to be certified for a particular model year's set of regulations. So it wasn't as big a deal as it would be now to slip a few cars in the boat coming from Sweden. In addition, titles were more casual then too, not all states even required them. And in the ones that did, the year put on it was as likely to be the year in which the car was sold instead of the year it was manufactured.
