Key will not rotate 900 1992

HELP...I'm late!!!

I turned off my car last night. When I tried to start the engine this morning, the key would not turn at all.

1. The steering wheel is locked and the wheels are straight; not putting strain on the steering column.

2. I used the emergency shift release to move the shift lever into all positions, but still, the key will not turn.

3. I have 4 original keys for this car and none work.

4. I have also tried to rotate the steering column both ways while trying to turn the key.

I have had no previous problems with this. Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Key will not rotate 900 1992

I suspect you suffer from 760 Key Syndrome, noted in the FAQ, with similar symptoms. Let us know how you solve this problem.

Key will not rotate 900 1992

      Steve,

After a tremendous amount of jiggling and turning, I was able to get the key to turn and start the engine.

After a little more research, I decided to take the switch apart. I successfully removed the key cylinder from the switch. Outside the car, the key still will not turn. This leads me to beleive that the cylinder has gone south.

      The removal procedure follows:
      1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
      2) Wait 10 minutes to be sure the SRS system is dicharged
      3) Remove 4 bottom screws that hold the plastic steering column/ignition cover pieces together.
      5) Lower the steering column to its lowest setting.
      5) Remove the top cover (it is not necessary to remove the bottom one).
      6) Rotate the key to the "II" position.
      7) At the top of the switch housing there is a small hole. Use a small hex key to depress a latch (attached to the cylinder within).
      8) While pressing down, pull out the key and cylinder together.

Now that it is out, I need to get a replacement...that part will have to wait until Monday :(

I'll submit pics at a later time.

      Most Unusual, wouldn't you say?
