I believe the aw-72 has different shift points to compliment the different characteristics of the 16 valve engine. So an aw-71 or aw-70 may not be a good match. On the other hand there are probably quite a few GLE's with 16 valve engines in the bone yards with broken timing belts and ruined heads that you could pull. I've even got a 1989 aw-72 trans in the back yard that I'm going to junk. You'd be welcome to take that one but I'm in Massachusetts, a bit of a haul. It has 126,000 miles on it, and I pulled it from a 1989 740 GLE with a bad 16 valve engine. I never drove the car it self. The previous owner said the trans was good but I can not vouch for it. Good lunk in your endeavors.
