95 Volvo 940 Non Turbo, Bosch fuel Sys in tank fuel pump 900

Hello Spook. That is indeed curious. I've got both an NA and turbo '95 so took extra interest in your comments. Both are LH 2.4 and both use an in-tank main pump. I'd always assumed they both used the same pump. Like you say, the Pocket Data Booklet shows the same flow specs and rated amperage for the two different part numbers, 9135418 and 9135605. Both engines use the same pressure reguator. The only significant difference I can find in the two fuel systems is the turbo injectors are rated for higher flow. If both pumps are rated for the same flow then I can't see why they aren't interchangeable.

I did a vehicle lookup on a Volvo dealer parts site. The fuel pump currently comes up as p/n 9438756 with fitment listed for both NA and turbo (for a wide range of years). It's listed as superseding 9180931, 9438002 and 9438003 -none of which match the Pocket Data p/n's, so go figure.

I also did a vehicle lookup in the Bosch Autoparts catalogue. The tank pump currently comes up as Bosch p/n 69693 (that p/n includes the screen). Fitment is listed for both engines. The OEM cross reference list includes Volvo p/n's 9135418, 9135419, 9135605, 9438756, 9438759, 9470674, and 9480152. That covers all our mentioned Volvo p/n's.

Pricing for the Bosch pump is considerably less than Genuine Volvo (like under $100 compared to over $300, depending where you shop). The Bosch pump looks considerably smaller than the original, so I have a suspicion it's a more universal design that meets the same specs so the only one Bosch bothers to keep in their distributor network, while Volvo may keep ordering from Bosch to the original design. Last pump I bought was the Hella (stamped Hella, Made in Germany, but sold under the Walbro brand name). It looks very similar to the current smaller Bosch pump. I got it because it was locally available and decently priced as I needed the car back on the road. I've had no problems with it in over 10 years.
