imo

1. drain fluid at the pan
2. remove the 2 starter bolts and let the starter hang AFTER removing neg battery terminal
3. remove pan bolts since you need to replace the gasket anyway
4. take pan off and work on it at your bench....so much easier
5. weld it at the bench
6. reinstall

should not take more than an hour welding included
