Thanks for the plausible explanation. I wouldn't have come close to imagining it.

Kept thinking the kickdown cable melted -- imagining you might have an auto. But the spool is designed to prevent that from holding the throttle open. I totally forgot about the prototype of "drive by wire" functions the cruise control performs, directly operating the throttle.
