The Bentley manual gives a great set of diagnostics for ABS. Usually the front wheel sensors need to be cleaned because they accumulate small bits of rust which makes the sensor no longer able to pick up a signal. The second major cause is the fuse by the the ABS control unit which should be under the passenger seat.

The FAQ has a section on ABS which is worth reading.
