Is the engine splash shield or skid plate essential? 700 1991

Here in the Midwest,I have had two different friends running without splash guards nosedive into snowbanks. The snow packed in around the front of the engine and stopped it abruptly sheering the teeth off their timing belts.By the way this is a great time of year to check out the snow racing volvos on youtube.
