starter and ignition switch

listen i was having sceeching noise and thought it was the starter. because when you turn switch the car off it still want to run it wouldnt turn off. so i brought a starter and it still was doing the same thing while driving the car for about 20 monute and then it stop i drove the car for about 1/2 haour and when i got to the library . i turn the car off. when i came back to start the car my stater caught a small fire and burnt out i had to have the car pulled back . please some one tell me what it could be.
