2000 S70 A/C - HELP!

My 2000 Volvo S70 non-turbo's air conditioning isn't running consistent. The cabin air flow turns off when I'm idle , along with the a/c compressor (I can feel it turn off as well). It picks back up and the air flow increases when I start accelerating. I've put the car in neutral and given it gas to see if that would work, but it doesn't. It only wants to flow when I'm moving. These sypmtoms occur irrespective of whether I have the control on "Auto" or on the manual fan flow. Plus, the air flow is not as strong as it once was when it is working. I live in FL, so during the winter, this isn't a huge priority, but summertime's just around the corner! HELP!

Very criptic. If the switches are in AUTO position when you start the engine, do the lights on the recirc and AC switches blink 20 times? That signals a problem in the ECC unit.

When was the last time you changed the cabin filter?

If the blower no longer works; you could check the fuses, check the blower motor, or the rheostat that controls the blower.

      2000 S70 A/C - HELP!

      Klaus,

Thx for the help. No, the recirc & AC switches don't blink at all when I put the switch AUTO. They just turn orange for the recirc & green for the AC.

I haven't changed the cabin filter in some time. I'm gonna change it and see if it helps.

As for the blower, it works, but sparatically and, unfortunately, I can't find a standard pattern for when it's working & when it's not.

      Thanks again!

Orange light means that the fresh air outlet is closed, flip the switch so you get outside air and a green light.
I suspect that the blower is not working and you are only feeling the air on the center dash vents, which allows outside air to enter the cabin when the car is moving.

Check the fuses for the blower first, because it is easy to do. If they are OK, slide the blower speed to max. If max works, then the problem is the rehostat that controls the blower. The blower can be checked by giving it 12V from a battery and a couple of long wires.

You will find more help in the S70 section. The problem is, the compressor clutch gap. It needs to be "re-shimmed". I have this problem in my V70, fortunately, it's winter here now. But when it would happen, it would be mostly at idle, or at a light. Then come on again on the highway. I had refilled with refrigerant, which at least made the compressor work. But I added a little more, and the problem became less frequent. Try that. Also, if you want to fix the compressor, here is a guide from Volvo Forums. http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6665

    Good luck.
