Gear Selector Reduced Function - 2000 S80 T6 S80 2000

Hoping someone can help...

My car is a 2000 S80 T-6 with 54,300 miles on it and serviced on a regular basis. This evening when I started the car after leaving a restaurant, the following message popped up on the message screen along with the Orange Triangle:

Gear Selector Reduced Function

I've seen a lot of messages mentioned in these forms but never this one. I also noticed that the light which is normally next to the PRND positions on the gear shifter (depending on which position it's in) wasn't coming on as I moved the shifter to various positions. We were able to drive home with no problems.

The only other thing that I should mention is that when we entered car, the inside fan was running which I know is a normal function of the S80 and helps prevent mold, etc in the air conditioning system. The fan was going until I started car where upon the fan stopped and the Gear Selector Reduced Function message came on. This probably has nothing at all to do with the message but thought I'd mention it.

I turned off car for a few minutes and started it again. Message still appears.

Any idea what the problem might be?
