PCV Value = Flame trap? 850 1994

My mechanic just told me that my PCV valve is "like, gone" (whether that means dead or missing I don't know) but that I should not bother fixing as it would be a lot of labor, removing the manifold.

Well I thought the PCV valve = the flame trap which I can see directions for cleaning on volvospeed in about 15 minutes. Am I wrong here? (This is a 1994 850 non-turbo wagon)

Also, a previous owner of the car had cut a vaccuum line (runs along the front of the valve cover) apparently to compensate for this blocked or messed up PCV valve, so if I can clean it then I can fix the hose right?

I just had to fix a major oil leak and I note that others have mentioned the flame trap if clogged can build up oressure and blow oil out the seals - I would like to fix this so I don't get a new leak!
