Car keeps running with keyless remote removed

My '56 Ford convertible had the ignition key on the left side of the steering wheel - the story goes like this - Henry Ford was driving with his grand children when one of them shut the car off.

He had the ignition switches moved to the left side.

Perhaps this 'feature' is to keep curious kids from shutting off the car.
