How to diagnose a TPS 850 1993

I believe my TPS is responsible for some shifting issues with my 93 850 auto. The car has 296k but the trans has 110k on it. I was reading old posts about strange shifting issues and the TPS. I recieve no engine or trans codes whatsoever. My trans will hunt sometimes for a gear, lock and then unlock the torque converter while maintaining speed on a flat surface. While on the way back home to visit my parents, I cleaned the contacts to the TPS by unplugging and plugging it in about 20 times and adding dielectric grease. Immediatly, the car shifted perfectly for about the first 3 hours. Then it kindof went back to what it was doing, but still a little better. Is there a way to test the TPS with a volt meter of something. And aslo, is it sometimes refered to as an accelleration sensor? There is a used on on ebay for a 97 I though I might give a try just to see. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff
