How does S80 reliability compare with say equiv merc or Bmw S80

Hi all,
I ask this Q because I am thinking about getting an s80. The price for used ones are great however I can understand that some/many s80 owners have had reliability problems.

I own a 760 gle. Before i bought it i was warned by most about that car. Some owners (a few ) said that most of the problems were solved by '87-88 and that the key requirement was to replace oil every 5000kms.
When I bought the vehicle , i was amazed at how much of it was not volvo. The electrical systems are bosch, the braking systems are girling, the autobox is aisan-warner (borg warner under licence). Some of the electrical problems were caused by the effect of vibration on the bosch fuel pump and other relays
I am now trying to work out what part of the s80 problems may be because of volvo design error/weaknesses, poor agent servicing and what part may be the result of OEM component failure. If the latter, the BM and merc owners must also be suffering

many thanks
Alex 760gle 240k kms
