Was looking at my recently purchased 97 R wagon and noticed that the top of the rear bumper did not fit up snug under the brakelight trim piece. There was about a 5/8ths gap (very noticeable) between it and the little 90 degree trim piece under the eyebrow brakelights. A friend of mind has a 96 T-5, and his bumper fits up snug to the underside of the back hatch door and the chassis where it curves around toward the rear wheel well. Happened to park beside a 98 T-5 yesterday and noticed that there was also a noticeable ugly gap between the top of the rear bumper and the underside of the brake light trim piece. The rear bumper on my 97 GLT is a very nice tight fit, the bottom lip of the hatch door almost touching the gray plastic. On the R wagon there's a full half inch. It was made in Ghent, Belgium, the 97 R wagon in Gotheborg. As too my friend's 96 T-5 wagon. I've removed the two 10mm nuts that hold the sides of the bumper to the rear of the chassis, and loosened the two major bolts beneath that hold the bumper to the chassis. I can't move the bumper any further forward because of the two square holes in the chassis that the side bolts go through, stopping any forward movement. Was this just a screw up on Volvo's part, poor quality control, or is it fixable? You can move the outside plastic shell of the bumper up and down, but not enough to take up all the visible opening showing. Is there a Volvo fender and body man who can advise me on this one? Dick
