Emergency brake continued - how to work that spring? 850 1997

So ... I am replacing the emergency/parking brake shoes. Well, let's say, that's what I'd like to be doing. Dunno how to get a good grip on the lower return spring to get it off and on. I tried various pliers, but having one hell of a time.
I know this is a very low-tech problem, but: Is there a trick for getting that lower return spring off and on?
