Failed emission testing

My "check engine" light has been going on intermittently for a few months. Using an OBD II scanner, it appears I have a malfunction in the O2 sensor circuit. Now that the weather is warming, the light has been off for a few weeks. However, I just failed my emissions inspection even though the light has been off. The report came back "not ready for testing". Is there a drive sequence that is necessary to allow the testing to proceed. I previously had reset the codes, and the OBD fault code result was "Pass". The mechanic stated that it takes time for the computer to give a "ready" reading, but alluded that I may drive in a certain manner to expedite this. Any suggestions?
