Oil trap and crank vent hose questions 850 1984

In process of replacing the oil trap and the dreaded plastic hoses are crumbling around me. Any reason to not fabricate a metal vent hose as long as the diameter is the same or larger? Just went to Home Depot and looks like supplies are readily available.

This is my first FWD Volvo and it is sweet, but the plastic is rot, same as the RWD units, just harder to get to.
