door trim fell off on an 850 turbo

Hi everyone. I have a 1994 Volvo 850 turbo wagon with 143k miles on it which I've had for many years. I've been having problems with the gray door trim that's located on the lower third of the doors on the passenger side. Some how the very front of the trim on the front passenger side door got caught in the front fender and that caused the rear door trim piece to also get out of alignment. So when one of the doors was opened, the trim would go outside the car instead of going with the door as it traveled inside as the door opened. The trim caught and bowed outwards.

Today the trim finally fell right off the car. I'd rather not spend the money to get it fixed. However, I noticed there are holes in the door where the trim attachments go. I don't know what will happen if water gets in there.

Do you think it'll harm the car by leaving the trim off? In other words, would you recommend getting the trim fixed for a functional (vs. cosmetic) reason. I don't want to try to save $150-200 and then cause $300 or more of damage to the door.

Thanks,
-Daniel W Fisher
