tick tick tick noise from inside car dash 850 1994

I'm just about to buy my first Volvo. I went and had a look today and I started it up, all was good, but I was sitting in the drivers seat and there was a ticking sound like a clock. It sounded like it was coming from the instrument panel. Is this a normal Volvo thing. The car is an auto, it was running, in park and handbrake on. I took the park brake off, but it still ticked away. Everything else was perfect except for this ticking.
