exhaust smell when using a/c or heat 850 1994

Whenever I use the Heat or a/c i get a strong exhaust smell...im thinking either exhaust leak or maybe some vaccume lines are hooked up wrong. Does anyone have any clues? This is my first volvo and it has the usual problems with the heated driver seat and power seat no working but i cannot stand this exhaust smell. I would also like to add that i luv this site. Any clues on the smell would be appreciated.
