blower motor resistance??? snow coming!!!

i remember reading a post about someone asking about the resistance of the blower motor or the resistors in the resistor pack. i have had no success finding the cause of my faulty blower operation. the blower never works unless i hook it straight up to 12v. i changed the ECC controls and the resistor pack. i hooked it up to a 12v lead and it worked fine but it's pulling way too much current. i tried a dimmer switch for home use and it didn't work at all. i then went to radio shack and got a switch they gave me and it burned up immediately. i need to find info on what kind/rating switch/resistor to use to rig this up. it would be nice to use a dimming-type switch so i can vary the speed. any info would be awesome seeing as it's going to snow tomorrow.

thanks,
tj
