Ticking noise V70-XC70 2000

I have a 2000 (old shape) V70T5. It has 40k miles but it seems to me to have a noisy engine at idle, warm or cold. It ticks quite loudly compares to my older 850 with 120k. Is it worn tappets or something more sinister.
Secondly, my brakes feel as though i am using glasspaper on the disks. The brakes & disks were all changed recently with volvo parts but i am still aware of the noise (at low speeds only) is this common with V70's as the 850 brakes like silk compared.
