Ignition swich problem (suspect) V70-XC70 1998

I'm having a problem with my ignition switch in my V70 (1998). Today I went to start the car and it would go to position 3 and then nothing would happen when I tried to start it. I did this a couple of times just to ensure I wasn't doing something wrong, but nothing. Then I took the key out, and turned the steering wheel a little to lock it. When I put the key back in, if there was any tension on the wheel from the locked wheel, the key would just rotate in a circle, not catching on anything to move into position I, II, or III. As soon as I took the tension off the wheel, it would then go to the other positions. After trying this twice it started. But why is my key just spinning with the steering wheel lock activated and also what suggestions does everyone have about it not starting when I turned the key all the way? The only other thing I could hear that sounded a little odd was a solonoid type noice from the passenger side of the car. I don't quite know how to explain that one, or when it happens, but noticed it when I turn off the car. Maybe the shift lock solonoid?? Who knows....

Thanks in advance.
