Replace 240 with 850?

I'm getting ready to retire my old (very tired) 240. I want to get a Volvo in the $4k-$7k range, may take a loan for more. What's the take on 850's compared to RWD Volvos regarding maintenance and reliability? I'm a student and need it to last at least 3-4 years without large expenditures. Are there specific ones to avoid? What should I watch for. I don't need allot of frills, just a good solid car.
