Starter Solenoid ground corroded 850 1995

I posted a message last saturday concerning my no-start issues. The help I got gave me the confidence to remove my starter and check it out. The first thing I noticed was that a braided ground wire from the solenoid to the starter housing was just about severed due to what looks like a short. Turns out, it just about disintegrated in my fingers. Anyone know if this can be replaced? Also, would a short in this wire indicate a bad solenoid or merely a bad wire? I haven't inquired at the dealer yet as to whether or not I can get a replacement wire, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to remove the end attached to the starter. It appears to be connected via a "notch" in the housing that is covered by the end cap. Does this cap come off? Also, the three philips head screws that attach the solenoid are hopelessly rusted. Should I drill these out in order to remove the solenoid to check it out? What a project - but I'm not ready to give in yet!
