Auto Climate control durability question

Hello:

I was wondering how the volvo system on various models has held up over time.

How does it fail? Does the system default to manual control, or is the temp all over the place? Has it been a headache or no problems?

What have been the repair costs? Would you skip it on a next volvo (or other make)? Do you think it has shortened the life of other components - AC, fan, etc?
