Shift Lever Won't Unlock 850 1994

I start the car and place my foot on the brake to release the shift lever so I can select reverse or drive, but the lever WILL NOT budge unless I shutoff the car and restart several times.

Any ideas what would cause this?

It has gotten progressively worse the past couple days and now I am afraid it will become permanent and strand me.

Thanks for any assist you can provide.
