1997 850 - Coolant 850 1997

I own a 1997 850 with 109K miles. Per the manual, the coolant never needs to be changed (so I obliged). Now the level (in the resivoir) is getting progressively lower and I want to add a 50/50 mix of distilled water and the right type of coolant. Naturally the dealership says the special Volvo coolant @ $20/gallon is all I should use. What say the experts? Thanks.
