I need a CD player in my ride. At one point I had an Alpine installed - sounded horrible (no bass) and soon realized that the Volvo 850 has a proprietary set-up - in order to have a decent sounding aftermarket unit, you pretty much have to replace everything - all new speakers (since Volvo uses 8 ohms) and a new amp as well (since the Alpine bypassed the Volvo amp).
I'm happy with the booming low end of my stock sc-810 - just need the CD capability. I've heard mixed things about the Alpine changer (sometimes not working, or having quirks) and I would want it installed in the glove box, but that's a permanent install (or rather, would put a hole in the back of the glove - and sometimes the door won't close).
So, I'm back to an sc-816 which is 100w, versus my sc-810 which is 80w. Asked at the dealer if I could swap in my sc-810 for a rebuilt sc-816 (+ the $220 they want for it), but they said no, they need an sc-816 in exchange.
A place in Wisconsin sells rebuilt sc-816's for $275 plus shipping. They also provide the code. Local salvage yards never have one when I call....
2nd part: my rear shelf speakers don't work. I've searched threads about this and was told that the magnets melt off of these (as in the tweeters) but trying to get these out of the car is a pain in the neck. A couple of folks have told me they're probably blown and need to be replaced, and that there are no magnets to melt off of those.
I already had to replace my left front tweet and left rear door speaker (undoubtedly blown from the Alpine)....paid roughly $70 for the tweeter and about $168 for the rear door speaker from the dealer (OUCH).
Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
