Locked glove compartment 850 1994

The glove compartment door of my '94 850 wagon is "stuck." When trying to work the lock with the key, it feels like there is nothing connected to it. I have tried applying a little pressure(prying outward)on the door while trying the key and the latch to no avail. I can't feel any mechanical connections/changes in resistance to the latch.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to get the thing open other than forcing it door until [something] breaks. Can the lock cylinder be removed to gain access to the actual latching/locking mechanisium in the door?

Any suggestions or guidenence greatly appreciated.
