mysterious battery action 850 1997

Hello,
I have a 1997 850 w/109K miles.
My battery died a few days ago. When I finally got around to jumping it, the car turned over fine. What happened next is what concerns me... the sucker started racing, it idled up over 4,000 RPM for 2 minutes before settling back down to 1K. What gives?
Sound familiar to anyone?
