Transmission 850 1995

A few days ago when I shifted the transmission to drive the UP Arrow light began to blink on the dashboard and the Check Engine light came on as well. Since then UP Arrow light is gone but the Check Engine light stays on.

I took the car to a mechanic who said that I need to replace some transmission switch and that it would cost $300-$350. Does anyone have a sense of what may be wrong with my transmission and does the repair cost sound reasonable?
