A V-70 over a V-40 V70-XC70

My son-in-law wants to buy a 1999 V-40 for mostly around town driving (Oslo) and trips out into the country. Though they don't have any children (yet), I told him buying a 1999 V-70 was more practical (though more expensive). Can anybody make a case for or against buying a V-40 over the V-70 with regard to comfort, mechanical, getting around in, investment, etc.? Need some good advice on this one, please. Dick
