I value reliability. I've heard of Volvo's with >100K miles or even >200K miles.
But, I've also read of electrical and other problems Volvo's have, the scariest being throttles that stick.
I've noticed that some of the forum members have owned >1 volvo despite their repair history.
I'm looking into a used V70 but noticed some forum members and even Consumer Reports say to stay away from certain model years. Reports also rate Volvo as poor in terms of reliability.
With such a history, what are reasons for buying a Volvo when competitors (esp. Japan) have products with comparable safety features and greater reliability (though not perfect)? I'd love to hear your responses as I am considering taking the risk and buying a Volvo.
As a background tidbit. In '97, I bought my first car, a '97 Honda Accord for its reliability, affordability and looks. Today it has 167,000 miles.
My wife drove a '93 Saab 9000 which kept breaking down when only six years old with 80,000 miles. It cost a lot every time we repaired it and it's in repair now. Her dad drives a '99 Saab 9-5 which also broke down when only two years old.
This affirmed my belief that Saab's were unreliable unlike Honda's.
Last year I bought my wife a '02 Honda Accord which has been problem free at 18,000 miles. She prefers her Saab for space and power.
I like the look of Volvo's and want one but I fear it's going to need constant repairs.
Please share your thoughts on Volvo's reliability and the benefits of owning one. Thanks.
