volvo hitch size? 850

I have a 94 850 wagon on which the PO had a hitch installed by the Volvo dealership. I ordered a Thule rack recommended by Thule for this car for 1.25 inch receivers since mine was obviously not 2 inch and those were the only choices. It appears that my receiver is closer to 1.5 inches and way too big for the rack. Is there some sort of Swedish standard for hitch size other than 1.25 or 2 inch? I guess the next question is is there an adapter to make it fit? Any info will help!
