PNP Switch 850 1995

A couple people suggested replacing the PNP switch will cure my starting problems when I posted a question a couple days ago (http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=725998).

I understand a bad PNP switch would cause transmition problems. But, how does a PNP switch problem cause starting problems? What is the link between the two?

Also, what is a ballpark estimate on what a service shop would charge for a PNP switch replacement (parts & labor)?

Thanks for the help.
