Gas tank cover not opening 850 1995

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 with 320,000 miles and am having problems with getting the gas tank hatch cover to unlock with the remote. If I lock/unlock the car a number of times, it will open, but this is very disheartening while you sit at the pumps.
Is there a manual release for opening the hatch? I need to gas up the car and cann't get it to open for me.
