Ball Joint vs. Tie Rod Diagnosis 850 1995

I recently went for an inspection sticker on a 95 850 GLT. It failed because the mechanic said it needed a new ball joint. (but he didn't remember which side) He told me to jack up the car and try to wiggle the wheel and I would find which one it was.

I did this and found that the driver's side wheel had a small bit of movement when I rocked it from side to side, but not on the top and bottom.

I thought that I had read on this forum that side to side movement suggests bad tie rods and top to bottom suggests a bad ball joint. Can anyone clear this up?

As a footnote, I brought it to another garage today for a second opinion and it passed inspection! I do want to make sure that I'm not driving with faulty front end components, however.

Thanks.

Brian
