Please help: '98 S70 GLT burning when car stops. S70

It smells like a cross between fresh tar, burning rubber, and anti-freeze. There is no odor before and when the car is in motion. Also, my temperature gauge is running about 4 notches away from the red part. Please keep in mind that I am a mechanical lightweight.

I appreciate any advice that can be offered.
