antifreeze odor 850

have a '96 850 wagon (turbo), had water pump replaced when I purchased it in june due to a funky anti-freeze smell, it was better but now that cooler weather has started, I'm noticing the smell again. But now ...new and improved, even stronger! Any position above 60 on the thermostat setting, and the smell emerges. Is this the heater core giving its last gasps? thanks.
