Hello Friends,


I have a 1996 850 glt with ~70k miles on it, and I'm experiencing some intermittent problems with some of its functions. I am wondering if they might be related. The problems go as:

1. The shift lock releases sometimes right away, sometimes after a long delay, and sometimes not at all. "long delay" means ten to twenty seconds after the engine turns over, and "not at all" means i got tired of waiting, usually more than twenty seconds. the workaround is to push the 'shift lock release' button (which means to me that volvo must have known they had a problem)

2. The windshield wipers work reliably in normal mode, but they usually don't work any more in intermittent mode. this means that when I put the selector in "intermittent" mode, nothing happens at all for any length of time

3. The wipers normally do not activate any more when I activate the windshield washer

Based on some findings at this site and others, I have replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch, in hopes that it might allieve the problems I'm experiencing. I don't see that this has made any difference, and I'm looking for new ideas.
