Cleaning the Engine 850

What is the best way to clean a 850's engine?

I used engine cleaning foams before (on a honda) but don't
like spaying water into the engine conpartment to wash it off.

I also have a steam clean which works well for a lot of surfaces, would
that be acceptable or am I asking for trouble?
