850 with auto trans-- clunk sound when slowing down 850 1994

This is the first time I've posted, so here goes. I have a 1994 with automatic transmission & (not every time, but often) when I put my foot on the brake & slow down, there's a "CLUNK." It sounds like it may be from under the car. I't been doing it for several weeks. Is it a terrible thing? Do I need a new transmission? Thank you.
