Buying an automatic transmission for a 1994 850 T-5 850

Hi, I'm in the process of fixing my 1994 850 T-5 Sedan, which suffered massive failure recently, when the transmission cracked in a number of places simultaneously. This was partially due to the 138,000 miles, 3 previous owners (one of which I know "dropped" the tranny from Neutral (revved up) into drive, causing massive dammage to the transmission in the process) and partially due to my fairly agressive driving habits. Long story short, I need a new (or remanufactured) transmission for my car. The Volvo Dealer in Eugene, Oregon quoted me $3500 to replace the transmission. An independent volvo shop in town quoted me $3100, taking into account that there would be no core refund (since the core of the transmission on the car is useless).

My most important question is this:

How much should I pay for 1.) a new transmission, without core refund. 2.) a factory? rebuilt transmission, also without core refund?

My secondary question, (and this one's out there): Is it reasonably possible to install a manual transmission in my car instead? I know that 850T-5R models were produced with manual transmissions, and they are FWD with the same motor (only slightly modified). Would it be possible to swap an 850T-5R transmission into the car? And, would that require replacing/modifying the ECU? or does the ECU not have any control over the transmission (and would thus be unaffected by a transmission swap)?

I know, I'm asking quite a few involved questions in one short post, without much background information; but I have faith in brickboard's expertise! Let me know what you think, and I'll be checking for replies.
