Fuel Gage 850 1996

hi,
I just acquired a 1996 850 T 5. this car has done 110,000 km. Noticed that the fuel gage/level indicator on the dash panel is erratic, usually indicating low fuel level when there's actually at least 10-20 liters left. Did anyone out there experience this problem, and how is this retified? Pls help.
