Whirring noise when putting car into gear S40-V40

Just this morning when I started the car for the first time in 3 days I got a loud whirring noise when I put the car in gear, which stayed on. It sounded like a pump that was working really hard or pumping and not getting anywhere. It have been rather cold here in NH so I think it might be due to that. Does anyone know if the oil pump can do something like this when cold, or possibly another pump? Thanks
